Why Teacher Education Needs a Definition of "Language"

Bill VanPatten

In this webinar, BVP explores what he calls a “missing piece” in language-teacher education: language. It sounds odd that prospective language teachers learn little to nothing about the nature of language, but an examination of teacher education programs reveals that this is the case. The result is that assumptions are made about both language and language acquisition that are not necessarily true, which in turn perpetuate myths and practices in the classroom. So join us as we show how a working definition of language challenges current teacher education programs and pushes us to rethink much of standard practice. In short, the cornerstone of talking about language teaching is to come to grips with the nature of language itself.
